Brevard High School students of all ages showed off their abilities at the 2013 Talent Show and Battle of the Bands. It took place on February 7 in the BHS auditorium. The 25 different acts ranged from dancing to singing to a juggling performance. Some students performed alone while others were part of large groups.

The show, which benefitted the BHS chorus program, was organized by theater and chorus instructor Mary Beth Shumate. It was judged by teachers Leesa Anderson, Kevin Spradlin, and Amy Shuford.

The Brevard High School senior class spent weeks organizing a large group dance to “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore, which was planned as a surprise performance. Senior Jessica Porter, who organized the event, said, “I thought we really needed to be more united as a class, so [the performance] was a way to do it.”

The first place winner received $100, the second place $50, and the third place winner received $25. The third place winners were sophomore Carven Morgan, juniors Tyler LaRowe and John Smith, and senior Sam Justice for their a capella performance of “Coney Island Baby.” Sophomore Brandon Zerressen won second place for his performance of his original song “Trapped Falling.” First place went to sophomore Kristy Stodola, who played “Orange Blossom Special” on the violin.

The talent portion was only the first half of the show; the Battle of the Bands took place after a short intermission. The winning band received $100. The winning band, Skylight Heights, was made up of seniors Sam Justice and Connor Freeman, junior Drew Chapin, as well as Austin Laughter and Chris Elliott. They performed their original song “The Anthem.”  The other band that performed, Ted and the Nuggets, was made up of seniors Forrest Hoover, Jack Van Horn, Tyler Holden and Aaron Brown. They played “Surf Wax America” by Weezer.

Skylight Heights practiced for weeks leading up to the show, so they were very happy to leave with the first-place title. “It was simply amazing when we won,” said Freeman. “I’m really proud of my band!”
