The women’s soccer season kicked off last night with an exciting first two games.

The junior varsity girls played well, and lead for the majority of the game. Brevard scored early, with sophomore Brittany Nicholson scoring within the first three minutes, and sophomore Dory Walrath scoring in the eleventh. Leading 2-1 at halftime, the Lady Devils had enough momentum to maintain the lead for the rest of the game, and score two more goals: another by Nicholson and one from freshman Hannah Mathis. The final score was 4-1.

The varsity team fought a tougher battle. Both teams had opportunities in the first half, including a shot for North Buncombe that was off the goalpost before being gathered up by Brevard’s defense. The teams entered halftime tied, with no score. But the second half had a different outcome, with North Buncombe scoring two quick goals in seven minutes. Brevard later scored, after a cross from senior Jessica Porter connected with senior Ali Carter’s head, and was put into the back of the net. However North Buncombe responded at the end of the game, scoring from a corner kick in the final minutes, and essentially held onto the lead. Though the final was 3-1, the game was heavy on the defensive side, and was closer than the score appears.

With both teams now kicked off and season in full swing, The Lady Devils soccer teams will play again on March 1,  against Hendersonville High, and varsity will play the next week on March 8 against Highlands.
