Softball defeats Tuscola, baseball falls short

By Brighton McConnell

Last night was a busy one at the baseball fields for Brevard.

The softball and baseball teams for Brevard High School both had home games on Tuesday, April 16 facing Tuscola High School, and many fans came out to support the schools.

The varsity softball team played in the afternoon, and dominated on all sides of the game. They defeated Tuscola 22-0, with the game being called early due to the mercy rule. The Lady Devils jumped out to an early lead in the first few innings, and never showed any weaknesses. They continued to put runs on the board, and contained Tuscola’s hitting very well, with the game being called after the 5th inning.

Varsity baseball had a more challenging game, and struggled to get their offense going. Starting pitcher Johnny Stamey had a shaky first inning, and gave up 3 runs before striking out a batter for the third out. After that, Tuscola’s pitching took over, and protected the lead for the rest of the game. Tuscola’s starting pitcher had an impressive outing, pitching a complete game, and held Brevard to only two hits for the game. Brevard had opportunities to score, especially in the 4th inning with runners on second and third with one out, but were not able to get a player across the plate, and stayed scoreless. Tuscola added on more runs throughout the rest of the game, and defeated the Blue Devils 8-0.

With their win yesterday, Brevard’s varsity softball team improves to a 12-2 record (8-2 in conference), which is the second best record in the Appalachian Softball conference. Baseball’s loss moves them to 8-8 in the season, and 4-5 in the conference. Both teams have their next game on Friday, away against East Henderson.
