Sharing the Wealth

Brevard–On Tuesday, Dec. 3, students and their families got an inside look on what college is really about; Financial Aid and how to finance a higher education.

The Brevard High School Guidance staff, along with Financial Aid expert Lisanne Masterson from Blue Ridge Community College, held a presentation for juniors and seniors, along with their families so they could learn more about how to pay for college and what they can do to get assistance, if needed and if they meet the qualifications.

Financial Aid can consist of the following: Loans, Federal Grants and work-study funds. Those who are considering going to college can gather more information on all of these and more by visiting the Federal Student Aid website.

As for students in North Carolina, they can also gain more information by going to the College Foundation of North Carolina website. From there, students can explore careers, look at different colleges, learn more about Financial Aid and can even fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or (FAFSA).

Brevard High Guidance Counselor Hallie Thoele says, “Financial Aid is a large piece of the puzzle in figuring out which college students may go to, so, learning about this is very important.”

According to Thoele, nearly 40 students and their families showed up to help improve their knowledge and gain insight on college preparation and financing an education.

“It was a great turnout but, we’re hoping to have more parents come in the future!”
