Brevard High School’s New Access Control Doors

For the past couple of weeks BHS has had minor construction going on throughout its hallways, this is due to the new control access doors being installed. The control access doors are being installed to make the campus safer for staff, students and campus visitors.

The Transylvania County Business Services Director, Norris Barger stated “The access control system is part of a larger project for all the schools to make the schools a little safer for students and staff and for the visitors that come on campus. Im pretty excited about it. The project includes new keys, new locks, and new access doors for the high school for students to use. We can schedule lock downs during class time or schedule them to open up in between classes. Just an infinite amount of possibilities in terms of security on campus.”

There is a system of how the key cards will be distributed, used and handled if someone loses their key card, “The way that works is a teacher will have a key card instead of a key, they’ll hold a card up to the door instead of a key to unlock the door. We have software that allows us to program each door on an individual basis or school wide basis to lock the whole building down or to unlock the entire building. If a teacher or a staff member loses a card, we will be able to deactivate that so someone that finds it won’t be able to step into the building. We will then issue another card.” Barger stated.

The only changes students will have to make is if they are tardy to school they will have to use the main entrance instead of a side door to get into the school building.

The control access system should be fully operational when students resume classes fall 2014.
