The broken 1976 boiler awaits demolition and removal.

The Transylvania County School Board recently approved spending more than $225,000 to replace a broken boiler system discovered during a yearly inspection.

The 1976 model boiler, located under the cafeteria, is responsible for heating the front, band and social studies wings as well as the old gym and auditorium.

The board decided to expedite replacement because this winter is forecast to be especially harsh.

The board approved funds at their last meeting for two new boilers that are smaller and more efficient. The new boilers will work at nearly 90 percent efficiency as opposed to the rate of 65 percent for the old one. Having two boilers will allow for heat throughout the school, even if one breaks down. Funding came from various sources in this year’s budget.

Workers began the removal process on September 30, and have been taking the system apart and carrying it out. Students and staff can expect the new boilers up and running by the second week in October.
