Pies were flying in honor of Holmes Desmelik, son of teacher Clare Desmelik, and junior Amber Rhodes. On Friday, October 17, Health Occupations Students of America, otherwise known as HOSA, coordinated a pie-throwing event to raise money for Rhodes, Desmelik, and the Make-A-Wish foundation of Western North Carolina.

Brevard High School staff and community members that were involved included Clare Desmelik, Chuck Owenby, Jimmy Harris, Rivers Smith, Jason Ormsby, Mark and Missy Ellenberger, Mick Galloway, Jason and Amanda Lippard, Kevin Spradlin, Angela Patane, Meredith Licht, Mark Robinson, Suzie Welch, Candice Owen, Laura Patch, Erik Wahus, and Ashley Dickson, among others.

Chaperones for the event were Vincent Warren, Tanya McCall, Chris Dodson, Carrie Elmore, Matthew Tuckey, and Jane Fuller, as well as many others.

Donations for the supplies for the event were made by Dr. Cozart, Dr. Krishinger, Brian and Melanie Long, Grocery Outlet, Rhodes Restoration, WINS Smokehouse Services, along with generous community members and anonymous donors.

At the end of the event, $1600 was raised for both Desmelik’s and Rhodes’s teams, splitting an even $800 for each. The gold headbands, labeled “Headbands for Hope”, raised $1200, and the pie-throwing event raised $400.
