Program allows students to stop crime anonymously

Crime Stoppers is an anonymous tip line set up by the Transylvania County Sheriff’s department. It allows the community to make  tips, and, if they turn out to be true, earn money.

There are many different ways to send a tip to Crime Stoppers. One way is to put a note in the Crime Stoppers locker located in the Brevard High School English wing.

Another way is to go to the Transylvania County Sheriff’s department website and either email or text a tip to Crime stoppers by sending TCSO plus your tip to 274637. Citizens can also make a anonymous phone call to Crime Stoppers at (828) 884-3168.

If your tip turns out to be helpful or informative in a case, depending on the way the tip was received, the person who dropped off that tip will be paid a sum of money.

“I would contact the reporting party either by phone or electronically, depending on how I received the tip, and arrange to meet and pay the person. They would be assigned a confidential number and we never know their name,” said Chief Deputy Eddie Gunter, coordinator of Transylvania County’s local Crime Stopper program.

“You can be paid for doing something good,” said Office Ellenburger, Brevard High School’s resource officer.

Crime Stoppers isn’t just at Brevard High; it’s everywhere.

“In 1996, we received information from a crime stopper tip that helped solved a murder case,” said Gunter. “There have been many drug arrests that started with a Crime Stopper tip.”
