Right here in Brevard High School we’re participating in an amazing movement.

We are now another school following and supporting the ‘R-Word Campaign’, a great cause that our Project Unify club brought to BHS. The purpose is to ‘Stop The Word to End The Word’, meaning to stop the incorrect use of the words “retarded” and “retard” when referring to people and actions. The big problem is most people use it as a substitute for words similar to “stupid” or “dumb”.

In reality, the ‘r-word’ is an outdated and offensive term that hurts a lot of people, whether directed towards a specific person or not. Even when referring to actions, there are many people who do not agree with the use of the word in a negative way. The ‘R-Word Campaign’ is on a mission to end that bad habit by raising awareness of its negative use. People who support this campaign work to use respectful language to promote community and more positive attitudes towards others.

Here at Brevard High, the Project Unify club held a gathering during lunch on Wednesday, March 4, to promote the campaign and its cause. Students were encouraged to take a pledge to no longer use the ‘r-word’ negatively by signing a big ‘R-Word Campaign’ poster. The turnout for the event was great, with many students of all ages dropping into the gathering during lunch to pledge their support of the movement.

Because this issue can constantly hurt and put down others, Project Unify encourages everyone to continue raising awareness and refraining from negative use of the ‘r-word’. For more information on the nationwide campaign, visit www.r-word.org. With enough support, they believe we can completely stop this word from having harmful use.
