Some people say there isn’t anything to do in Brevard; however, October is here and there is something to do every weekend for the next few weeks! The Silvermont Mansion is the host to many exciting and spooky festivities.

The “Revenge of the White Squirrel” is the theme of this year’s event. This year is the first year of the “Revenge of the White Squirrels” and “Lighted Pumpkin Patch” activities held at Silvermont.

The “Stingy Jack’s” display from Pisgah Forest has been donated to the “Lighted Pumpkin Patch.” This includes the lighted pumpkin collections and other Halloween decorations.

Children can participate in events like the “Scary Squirrel Search” and venture through the “Haunted Pumpkin Patch.”

The “Scary Squirrel Search” is an event where scary white squirrels will be hidden as part of a scavenger for kids to find.

The “Haunted Pumpkin Patch” will have a “ghost-haunted display, a Witches Garden, as well as Pumpkin Manor with a scary house and graveyard,” said Jeanne Hunter, a spokesperson for the Pumpkin Patch.

Ms. Ronneburger’s class is designing a backdrop for photo-ops that is a “campy 50s movie-style display” said Hunter.

“I am looking forward to seeing Silvermont in a ‘different light.’  The lighted pumpkin displays are intriguing, as I never went to Stingy Jacks. The work put into these displays are unreal!  I am so excited to see it all come together!” said Hannah Small, a volunteer at the Patch.

These Halloween festivities will take place every Friday and Saturday in Oct. from 6-10 p.m. beginning Oct. 9. The cost is $5 a person and all the proceeds will benefit the Children’s Center and Silvermont.

The Children’s Center is a nonprofit organization whose mission “is to create, maintain, and operate a center that shall coordinate a multidisciplinary approach for services for children who are at risk of, or victims of, neglect and abuse in Transylvania County.

“The Friends of Silvermont are community advocates for developing and sustaining Silvermont Park as a vibrant community center and historic landmark.  The mission of FOS is to support and advise Transylvania County management in the renovation, enhancement and upkeep of the Silvermont mansion and surrounding park,” said Kathy Zimmerman, a master gardener who volunteers at Silvermont.
