Athletic Budget Demystified

Football produces more revenue than any other sport at BHS.

School spirit has always been a top priority at Brevard High School. Recently, some fall sports have gotten new uniforms and are looking better than ever. Don’t you ever wonder where that money comes from? Ever wonder why certain sports don’t get the money they deserve?

Among all the sports, there are 26 junior varsity and varsity teams. The county provides $22,000 to divide and use for each sport.

That may seem like a lot of money, but it really is not. Each sports team must pay for officials, security, announcers, clock and gate keepers and maintenance.

Keeping up fields and cleaning facilities is hard work. When it is all split up, each team gets about $850 to spend. Many teams have fundraisers like selling discount cards or team paraphernalia to fans and other members of the community to help them to earn money to buy new uniforms and other things they may need.

Football is the sport that brings in the most money. Any revenue that they earn goes straight back to the school’s sports fund to help other teams.

The Booster club is another important factor with the budget. Last year the booster club gave $32,000 to the budget from their fundraising.

“Our school is very fortunate to have a club that helps support sports because I know most schools don’t do that,” said athletic director, Mick Galloway.
