Hall Passes

by Connor Newell

They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from a small piece of paper to a large wooden board and everywhere in between.  No matter the shape or size, they all have two things in common. They are hall passes and they don’t make sense.  The hallway is not an international border.  You should not need a slip of paper to walk on it.

Seniors, at 17-18 years old, are told they are adults and should act like it, yet they still have to ask permission to use the bathroom.

An honor system should be implemented to replace the hall pass system entirely. Teachers should not decide the severity of our needs just because of the inconvenience it imposes on them.

Even the question itself is embarrassing.  Here we are, being handed college application forms and expected to act like adults, yet we have to ask permission to get a drink of water or use the bathroom.

The disturbance even disrupts the class.  The teacher, who might be in mid-lecture, has to stop and tediously write a hall pass for a student who won’t even be gone for 5 minutes.
