BHS has many different ways of celebrating big events and holidays. From festivals to parades, Blue Devils dress up to get into the spirit.  This week was Halloween.  Some people really got in the spirit by dressing up in a costume at school.

Halloween originally started off as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts.  This was always done the day before November 1st, and it was originally called Hallow’s Eve.  This later turned into Halloween.

Halloween has obviously evolved and changed since then.  Now it is a community-based event often described as a child-friendly day with activities such as trick-or-treating.

Not all countries celebrate Halloween.  The only countries that embrace Halloween as a holiday are the United States, Ireland, Puerto Rico, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia.

“Halloween makes me feel happy and excited to see everyone having a good time and it’s kinda cool to see how people dress up and family stuff, like family costumes.”

A study from CBS News shows that the most popular costumes for the year usually depends on that year’s trends from TV shows, movies, politics, and the latest scandals.

This year’s most popular costumes definitely fit into those categories.  The most popular for this year were minions, Caitlyn Jenner, Donald Trump, Netflix and Chill, and Kim Kardashian.

At the school, there was a huge variety of different costumes.  None of them were store bought. They were all made custom by hand.  There was an evil teddy bear, and octopus, an evil nurse, Mario, and Luigi.  They were all very creative.

A study from CNN shows that the average American will spend $74 on Halloween costumes, candy, and decorations.  The number for decorations, costumes, and candy will top 6.9 billion for this year. 64% of Americans or 41.2 million people are planning to celebrate Halloween this year.
