James Hargis receives Art Honorable Mention award

Art affects people lives in many ways. Making art, helps one express how they might be feeling in a way, that words can’t describe. It has been proven in multiple studies that when people make or see art they feel many emotions. It is also proven that the first thing a person notices about an art piece is the complexity it has.

James Hargis knows first hand the emotions that are felt through art, when he won an honorable mention award for his art piece. “When I found out I got an honorable mention, it was really exciting because I’ve never really gotten recognition for my art before.” Hargis said about how he felt when he won.

The requirement for being able to compete in the competition, is that the student must attend a school in the Western North Carolina region.

There was a wide range of subject and media choices in this competition. All art pieces were submitted digitally and judged by local professional artists.

This is a national art competition, and if a student wins a gold award, their art piece is sent off and judged nationally. Brevard High School has participated in this many years and have done very well over the years, including winning a national award.

Hargis’ art piece was a smoking advertisement that was meant to prevent people from starting to smoke. James said, “I entered because I really liked the piece, and I thought it had a good shot at winning.”
