DIY Fairy Jar

by Meredith Hooper and Ashley McBee

For this week on DIY Do or Don’t, we made (well, attempted to) make a fairy jar with glitter and glow sticks. The “recipe” for the fairy jars are as follows:

  • One mason jar
  • Diamond glitter
  • One thick glow stick or about 5 or 6 thin ones
  • Serrated knife or scissors
  • Rubber gloves

Step 1:

The first is to decide which color glitter and glow stick you want in the jar. Cut open the bottom of the glow stick carefully on a paper towel because it is messy and will get all over the place.

Step 2:

Next dump the contents of the glow stick carefully into the jar. If the insides of the glow stick get in your eyes or mouth, believe me, it burns. So, again, be very careful.

Step 3:

Then grab your glitter and dump it into the jar on top of the glow stick contents. The amount of glitter is subject to the size of the jar and the desired level of sparkle.

Step 4:

The lastly  tightly secure the jar and shake it in order to coat the inside of the jar with the glitter and glow stick material. Now that you are done, you can place this inside your room at night, in your yard, or on a deck outside.

Keep in mind that these jars only last about 8 hours, and they can be washed out to be used again for something not food related. When Ashley and I made our jar, we used a quart sized jar, about 4 thin glow sticks, and around a tablespoon of glitter. Seeing as how the recipe was vague, our fairy jars didn’t turn out as well as we hoped it would, but we would definitely try it again with a different size jar or more glow sticks and glitter.
