With the beginning of the school year comes a chance to try new things and create new experiences. The Brevard High School club fair is an important event for any student who wants to buff up their college applications, meet new people, or just have a good time.

The club fair is, by definition, a fair of clubs. Each of Brevard High’s club members work hard on banners, flyers, and even the occasional decorative jar of glitter ,according to Kyle Tinsley, president of the Acceptance Club.

“It’s a chance to get out there and kind of showcase what your club does,” Tinsley said.

While the club fair is a practical gala of extracurriculars, the planning behind the event is a bit less glamorous. Student council officers work behind the scenes to make sure that everything runs smoothly.

“[The student council] makes sure that every club knows about it. We try to get every club to have either their president or a good publicity person to be at the fair,” said Kathryn Bailey, a student council sponsor.

Bailey has the answer to many students’ question: why bother?

“As somebody who writes a lot of teacher recommendation forms for colleges, I think [clubs] are very important, because I know that universities look at involvement in things other than academics,” Bailey said.

Not interested in college? Clubs still offer benefits for the students who choose to participate. Clubs give students a chance to make new memories with people they might otherwise not have a chance to meet, or help them find their own place in the jungle of high school.

“Clubs give people a sense of belonging, they help you find friends, they help you find a place in the school. Clubs bring together people of similar interests, they bring together people of all different social circles, …and they really give you a taste of high school life unlike anything this school offers,” said Tinsley.

The club fair has a broad range of clubs to choose from, offering everything from chess club to ultimate frisbee to volunteer opportunities. Every student, the intellectual to the emotional, can find a place to belong at the Brevard High club fair.
