The first Thanksgiving was celebrated at Plymouth. The Indians and the Colonists came together in autumn for a feast in 1621. They celebrated the first successful harvest of corn. The festival lasted 3 days. The Indians brought 5 deer, and the pilgrims cooked swan, lobster and seal.

In 1623 the Pilgrims had their second thanksgiving to celebrate the end of a long drought. In 1789 George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving Proclamation. In 1817, New York was one of the first states to officially adopt Thanksgiving. In 1941 F.D.R. signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November.

Although the pilgrims did not eat turkey, today it is the main centerpiece of most American dinner tables. There are now parades and the president pardons one or two Thanksgiving Turkeys.
