Local coaches, athletic directors, and administrators are pushing for change at Brevard High School. They are hoping that the Board of Education will approve their plan of installing artificial turf at Brevard High School’s memorial stadium. The project would cost roughly $500,000 and if all goes according to plan be scheduled for May 2014.

The turf field would last 12-13 years and the athletic department has plans to make it self-sufficient. BHS’s field hosts an average of 79 contests on it a year, a amount much higher than the recommended amount for the field. A turf field would allow almost unlimited usage and would require much less maintenance.

There’s also an argument for it’s benefit to our community. The group presenting this argument believes the turf field will encourage economic growth in the town of Brevard. Hosting more competitions will bring more people into Brevard. A nicer field will also encourage potential recruits for Brevard College to choose them.

When asked about turf on the BHS field, soccer player and band member Austin Gragg said, “I think turf on our football field would be beneficial because it’s more durable and stays in place better”. Hopefully with some support from the community Brevard High School’s athletic department will see their project come to life!
