Do we Really Need the SAT?

Every High school student dreads the day they have to take the SAT. These test are said to evaluate the students basic aptitude in a number of topics, but how beneficial are they?

Most colleges and universities require SAT and ACT scores for students to be evaluated for admission. According to college board the SAT is “a suite of tools designed to assess your academic readiness for college.”

Approximately 750 colleges and universities dropped their SAT admission requirement, including Wake Forest University who found that dropping the requirement diversified their student body.

Is the SAT fair? Many feel that the SAT represents financial stature more than academic competence. According to New York Times wealthier families can afford preparatory courses that teach students test taking skills.

Test taking is a skill and is more important in the SAT then the actual material. Many accuse the SAT of not fairly measuring students aptitude but only their test taking abilities.

The SAT is currently being changed to make it a more accurate test. While this is happening many journalists, parents, educators and grassroots organizations work to eradicate the test.
