Last Monday, fifty-two Transylvania County students were honored for their hard work in career and technical education.

The National Technical Honor Society held their yearly induction at the Transylvania County Library on March 9, where they ushered in a large group of students. Juniors and seniors from both Rosman High and Brevard High who have great achievements in CTE classes and prospective careers in vocational fields.
The NTHS is an organization that began in 1984, and is dedicated to honoring students who have been leaders in career and technical education courses. They work to award society members with scholarship and career opportunities while promoting excellence in everyone’s educational endeavors.

This year was the first that juniors were able to be nominated by teachers for NTHS. Event organizers praised the ten juniors inducted for their hard work, and cited the reasoning behind this change as creating a larger opportunity for students to apply for scholarships offered through the society.

In order to qualify for National Technical Honor Society, students must meet certain academic and participation requirements. For high schoolers in Transylvania County, they must have taken at least four CTE classes in a certain field that the state determines as a ‘cluster’, such as agriculture, health, graphics, or business. The student also must participate in some form of CTE club and have at least a 3.0 weighted GPA. This means for BHS students, active participants in the FFA, HOSA, FBLA, or graphics clubs are eligible for nomination and induction. If these characteristics are met and the student has displayed leadership during these involvements, a teacher may nominate them for NTHS.

The ceremony began with a reception for inductees and families catered by one of Rosman teacher Billie Wilson’s foods classes. CEO of Transylvania Vocational Services Nancy Stricker also guest spoke to the students about achievement in career and technical education before the official inductions began.
