Buying Clothes on a Budget

In today’s economy, money doesn’t come easy and items aren’t cheap. For many families in the United States, buying things like new clothes throughout the year is almost impossible. This is where budgeting tips really come in handy.

The first tip is to buy at low-end retail shops. Thrift stores, consignment shops, and even yard sales have designer clothes for very cheap. All this takes is a small amount of money, a large amount of time, and a great eye.

“The best way to look stylish on a budget is to try second-hand, bargain hunting, and vintage,” actor Orlando Bloom told British GQ.

The next important tip is to buy quality clothing items. Clothes that are priced cheaply are made cheaply. These clothes will usually only last between 15-20 washes. Buying nicer clothes from name brand stores may have a bit of a higher price, but they will last through 50-60 washes.

“The flood of cheap manufactures, for which the people have no need, destroys their industries. They become dependent on this trade and the demand for goods can only be met by enslaving their fellows,” said Barry Unsworth of Sacred Hunger.

Another tip for successful budgeting and saving money is to know what you want and to never buy on impulse. Buying on impulse leaves you with year old clothes that still have tags on them and brand new shorts that you never got to wear because you grew out of them already. In order to wisely spend money while keeping a budget is to only buy clothing that you need.

All of these tips are very effective, but there’s one even better than all of the others; buy undergarments for as cheap as possible. Of course you aren’t going to buy your underclothes from a thrift store or yard sale, but for ladies especially, spending twenty dollars for three pairs of underwear is a bit ridiculous. TJ Maxx, American Apparel, H&M, and Target have comfortable underwear, bras & undershirts for reasonable prices.

When buying clothes, a budget is a great way to keep from overspending. There is no need to spend large amounts of money on poorly made clothes, undergarments that no one is going to see, or clothes that are going to sit in your closet with tags on them for years before you finally decide to give them away. By buying smart and not buying on impulse, you’ll save more money than you even realized you were spending.
