Brevard is known for its hiking trails that often lead hikers to beautiful overlooks of mountains or stunning waterfalls.  Hiking after school or during the weekend is a favorite activity for many students and teachers.

Junior Ashly Dzaahabiyyah’s favorite hiking trail is Graveyard Fields along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

“When I first went, it was fall and all the trees were all orange and yellow.  It was very pretty and scenic,” said Dzaahabiyyah.

Graveyard Fields is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Sam’s Knob and Black Balsam.

“It’s a fairly easy trail,” Dzaahabiyyah said.

Sam’s Knob is teacher Josh Tinsley’s favorite trail to hike.

Sam’s Knob is extraordinarily beautiful any time of year, especially in the fall when the leaves are vividly colored and the cold winds of fall come early,” Tinsley said.

Sandy Cove in DuPont State Forest is another great place to go hiking.  It’s a relaxing 20-minute climb to the top of a small mountain and has a great view of the lush forest.  This trail is very popular for mountain bikers.  When you are hiking Sandy Cove, make sure to be alert for bikes.

The Sandy Cove entrance is located near the end of DuPont, past High Falls.  Travel up Staton Road until you intersect with Cascade Lake Road. Turn left and follow that road until you see a parking lot for the trail on your right.

Hiking is a great way to spend time with friends and to create great memories.  It is also great for relieving stress and enjoying the peacefulness and tranquility of the forest.
