TIME Mars Project

by Lauren Tooley

The TIME program has continued to impress the school and community with their collegiate level research. This week, the Broadcaster talked to James Thompson about his and Chase Bishop’s project.

The two freshman TIME students took on an incredible task: adapt an engine for use in Mars exploration. They chose to adapt and test a pressure engine that used carbon dioxide to power it, instead of compressed air. This single change makes it compatible for utilization on Mars.

The two students competed at the state level of the Student Academy of Science. During the competition, students from all over the state presented their work in the form of a presentation, as well as a formally written research paper. Chase and James placed first in their category of engineering and technology.

James explained what was next for their project. “We will attend a conference next February in Boston with other first place winners.”
Chase and James will travel to Boston with three other TIME students to represent Brevard High School at a national conference with scientists from all over the world.
