Fairly Good Times

Brevard FFA recently went to the fair, and not for the rides or food. FFA members showed prize-winning animals, bringing home many ribbons for BHS.

The first weekend several students from FFA showed in different livestock events.

“[Juniors] Abigail Gant and Selina Brown showed their Holstein dairy steers that they have been raising since March,” said Sarah Rhymer, an FFA sponsor. “Abigail won her market steer class; therefore, she competed in the championship round.” Brown placed 4th in her market class.

In addition, junior Hannah Lemel won reserve champion with her Jersey Spring Heifer in the dairy show. She showed a sponsored Spring Heifer from

Lily Harris and Hannah Lemel at the fair, loving their cows.

Mike Corn. Lemel also earned reserve champion. Sophomore Lily Harris got reserve champion as well with her Brown Swiss. Harris has had her cow since 2016. Lemel has been working with her cow since the beginning of the school year.

Even though some FFA members did not show cows, they still helped out. They helped in the “mooternity” ward. The mooternity ward is where the FFA takes pregnant cows to have their calves. There were 43 students helping out in the ward. Two heifers gave birth while they were there.

Livestock is more than cows, though; it also involves pigs and broiler chickens. Senior David Howell; juniors Selina Brown, Anna Bryson, Kaylee Cope, and Jacob Fulp; and sophomore Lily Harris showed pigs that they have been working with all summer. Several of those students won their market and showmanship classes.  C Selina Brown took two pigs to the show at the fair. One of her pigs placed 3rd for one of her pigs and last for another one of her pigs.

In addition to the showmanship contests, there are also truck and tractor driving events. Sophomore Jacob Smith won first in the tractor driving event, which means he will go to compete at the state level.

Even though they did not go on the rides and get food, they still had a blast.

“I think that FFA is a great opportunity for any student, whether you’re interested in showing animals or not,” said Brown.
