Proposed New Schedule Causes Concern

High schools students might soon have classes all year long with all eight exams at the end of the school year according to a proposed new schedule by Superintendent Dr. Jeff McDaris. The schedule is not year round, but students would have the same classes for the whole school year.

Students would have five sixty-minute classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students would have three ninety-minute classes. They would also spend some time working online.

Some people have concerns about the schedule, and many think it is confusing.

“I think it’s really confusing,” sophomore Emma Dauster said.

Most agree with Dauster and find it unnecessarily complicated.

There are also concerns that students would get overwhelmed having eight classes, while some teachers are concerned about having enough supplies to teach all their classes at the same time.

However, some disagree with Dauster.

“I encourage it,” said social studies teacher John Hogan. “I would much rather teach you for a whole year than a semester.”

The proposed schedule might help students adjust to more of a collegiate model. It would also prevent exams from being right after Christmas break.

Students are encouraged to send feedback and questions about the proposed schedule to Andrew Healy, Superintendent’s Communication Council representative for BHS, at mhealy@tcsnc.org before the end of school on Tuesday, December 13.
